SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. It is used to secure the internet connection. This includes personal data from web shops, online banking and other sensitive transactions.
You can recognize these SSL-secured websites by the lock at the top of the URL/address bar of the browser. The entire bar can also be green.
Information running over this connection cannot be read by third parties.

A website with an SSL certificate exudes trust. The visitor sees that the owner's identity has been verified. In addition, it is required by law to secure the transmission of personal data via the internet.

The Privacy Act states that it is mandatory to secure the transmission of personal data via the internet. In the Personal Data Protection Act (Wbp) this is described. It Dutch Data Protection Authority (CBP) therefore recommends the use of an SSL Certificate.

There are several types of certificates and there are also several validation methods. For example, there is domain name validated (DV), organization validated (OV) and extended validated (EV).
