10 years ago, you could quietly set up a CMS website based on WordPress or Joomla and not update it. That wasn't the way to go then either, but there was a chance that your website (if it wasn't ranked too high in Google) wouldn't get hacked. Or not very often.
Nowadays, when server software, WordPress, plugins and templates are not updated, the question is not whether a website will be hacked, but when. Active website management is a must these days.
Security
Hackers today use crawlers that scan websites for known security vulnerabilities. Sometimes at 10-times a minute, code is tried in the hope that the website in question has missed an important security update. These crawlers are the result of a botnet of hacked computers and routers. Thus, a website is under attack from different ip's. Without active management and security, these attempts can be unlimited.
Wordfence, the number one WordPress security plugin, with over 28 million installations, records an average of about 94 thousand attacks per minute. With website security, you often only notice how bad the attacks were after a security plugin is installed.
Cheap website and hosting providers
Often, when creating a website, savings are made on management and hosting costs. A good saving on paper, but in practice often an additional high cost later.
A hosting package of, say, 1 euro a month sounds nice, of course, but often such an amount can only be offered through savings. Think of having a customer service that only answers by e-mail, too many websites on 1 server, insufficient monitoring and security, etc. Also, in case of problems, high fees are often charged to get something fixed.
The result is often that your website is on a server with too many websites and no or poor management at all. Even if your website on such a server is well maintained in terms of updates, the other websites on this server still pose a danger. If these websites on your shared server are frequently hacked, this will ultimately have a negative impact on the reputation of the server/IP in question. In the worst case, the server's ip will end up on various blacklists and Google will no longer offer websites with the same ip in search results.
Backups
If the website does get hacked then it is always nice to have a clean backup. This will fix a hacked website in no time.
Again, with hosting companies with low monthly fees, 99 times out of 100 this is not taken care of. Again, you often don't notice this until it's too late.
