The trusted payment method iDEAL is changing. During 2025, iDEAL will become part of the European payment system Wero, developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI). Little will change for customers, but for you as a webshop owner, it is smart to know what is happening behind the scenes and whether you need to adjust anything.
What is Wero?
Wero is the successor to iDEAL and other European payment solutions. The goal? One common, modern payment method for Europe, supporting bank transfers, recurring payments and QR codes - and ultimately making payments between countries easier.
iDEAL will remain as a 'brand' for now, but the technology behind it will be revamped. That revamp will include faster payments, extended features and better links with other European banks.
What does this mean for your webshop?
1. Do you use a payment provider such as Mollie, Buckaroo or Pay.nl?
Good news: then you almost nothing to do. These parties will arrange the transition to Wero for you. They make sure the technology is adjusted in the background.
What you can do:
- Check whether your provider supports Wero (Most already do or soon will).
- Keep up to date with visual changes, such as a possible new logo or different button text.
- Test your checkout once your provider is over to Wero.
2. Are you using a customised iDEAL link?
Then you should take action. A direct link to iDEAL via Currence or a specific bank will no longer work once the migration to Wero is complete. You will:
- Need to convert the link to the new Wero standard.
- Or switch to a payment provider that already handles this for you.
What will change for your customers?
Not much. The payment experience remains largely the same:
- Your customer chooses iDEAL (or soon Wero),
- selects the bank,
- and pay through a familiar environment.
Behind the scenes, payment is then made through Wero. The logo or name may change, but the user experience will remain familiar.
